(1) Pat drove 6 miles at an average speed of 12 miles per hour and then drove the remaining 4 miles at an average speed of 10 miles per hour.

The question is simple enough. To find the average speed, we need total distance and total time, or some other things that will get us to those two things. And we already have total distance. Glancing at the data statements, we can see that Statement (2) is sufficient, because it gives us total time. So that one is done. Now we evaluate Statement (1) separately. From statement (1), we can get the time Pat took to go the first 6 miles and then the time she took to go the next 4 miles, so we also get the total time from statement (1), and it's sufficient.
